What is a project's financial model? Financial modeling is an important startup planning tool that helps determine whether it makes sense to launch the project and raise investment, how effective the company's operations are, and whether its development strategy is right. Not having an economic blueprint of the business is fraught with negative consequences, from unreasonable, unjustified spending to the complete failure of the idea. Without a well-developed financial model for business development, a project risks going bankrupt in its first year of operation. Building one helps you understand how the company works and how it should be developed, and assess the profitability and value of the business.

I understand there may be some resistance, along the lines of: “How do I know what will happen in the future, and how?” And that is fair too. No one can predict it exactly. But building a financial model will give you a tool for understanding the company's strengths and weaknesses, ways to optimize costs, and ways to increase profit. And for investors, the financial model will help determine how well the founder understands their business and what goals they are pursuing. A financial model helps you forecast revenue, profit, and cash flow, and calculate how changes in the market or within the company will affect its financial position.

By calculating base, pessimistic, and optimistic scenarios, you can set a sales and expense plan for the future. A financial model helps you make sound management decisions based on numbers. It allows you to test hypotheses; calculate profitability at different stages of the company's operations, taking into account factors such as seasonality, market growth, and risks; set goals for the company; minimize the risk of cash gaps; and calculate whether you need to raise outside funding: bank loans, other borrowings, your own funds, and so on. A financial model should not be confused with an actual profit and loss statement, which reflects historical data. A financial model is a forecast of future development.
